John Wooden, “the Wizard of Westwood,” became a basketball legend as the coach of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins men’s basketball team – and in the wake of his passing Clear Channel Outdoor has launched a pro bono digital billboard campaign in his honor.
Clear Channel is showing some of Wooden’s better known aphorisms, such as “Have utmost concern for what’s right rather than who’s right,” and “Success travels in the company of very hard work. There is no trick, no easy way,” in a rotating series of displays appearing across more than 70 digital billboards in the company’s Los Angeles network. Each display closes with the tagline “Thank you for your inspiration, Coach.”
“Coach was a personal inspiration to my life, as I grew up in Southern California and as a high school sports coach. We saw an opportunity here as a company to honor someone who has meant so much to this community and the sporting world,” Layne Lawson, area director of public affairs for Clear Channel Outdoor, said in a press release. “Using our displays to keep Coach Wooden’s philosophy and wisdom fresh in the minds of Angelenos is just one way for us to give something back to our Southern California community.”
The campaign was launched last week and will continue through the end of the month.
